ST1725: Issues in Modern Theology: God and Human Rights
Instructor: Clifton F. Guthrie: Bangor Theological Seminary, Bangor
Campus
Fall,
2008, Wednesdays, 6 to 9 p.m.
Description: The Christian theological tradition, with its
affirmations of a God who creates humanity in God’s own image and
identifies in Christ with the world’s suffering, is in a special
position to engage in the global dialogue on human rights. This
course will explore both those who assert that Christian faith gives
rise to human rights and those who question whether human rights
really exist or are Western liberal abstractions. Biblical and
theological anthropology will ground our discussion as we move on to
recent critical theological proposals and Christian responses to
cases abroad and at home.
