  2. Try to memorize the gospel reading for Sunday 10/1 in the NRSV version: Mark 9:38-50 (Please don't be frustrated, I know this is difficult, but please try)

Homework for 10/18 

  1. Read Theissen, 63-89: non-Christian sources 
  2. Review the Two-Source-Theory (See text book p. 25).
  3. Interpret Mt 9:1-8 as and edited version of Mark (on the background of the Two-Source-Theory)
    1. What did Matthew change (what did he delete, rearrange, add)?
    2. Why did Matthew make these changes?
  4. Work through the questions for the quiz.
  5. Write your book review and submit it to get it off your shoulders (due 11/8).

Homework for 10/25

  1. Read: Theissen 316-346: Jesus as poet
  2. Read: Mark 4:1-20 - the parable of the sower and compare it to the parallel in Matthew 13.
  3. Read the Infancy Gospel of James (Complete Gospels Textbook): List questions Early Christians may have asked about Jesus that are answered in this Gospel.
  4. Prepare for the quiz next week. Work through the questions for quiz 1.  It will be posted on the web after next class and you have one week to take it.

  2. Read Hellenism in Theissen 125-140.
