Seminary Storm Cancellation Policy
  -
(November 1, 2009)

It snows in Maine, sometimes in substantial quantities. But it doesn’t always snow in the same amount in all locations – a complicating factor in making decisions regarding class cancellations and school closings for a seminary in two locations with commuting students, traveling faculty, and video conferencing. Given these realities, the following are normative practices in the event of substantial snowfall, severe icing, or other inclement condition.

·         Because our basic mission is to provide education, students, faculty, and staff should assume campuses are open and classes are in session unless the President (or Academic Dean in the President’s absence) determines otherwise.

·         The President will decide whether to cancel classes or to close campus, on a day-by-day basis, by 6:00 A.M.

·         If the President’s decision at 6:00 A.M. is to cancel classes or to close campus, it will be for the entire day…and the President’s decision will not be changed even if, during the course of the day, the early weather reports prove erroneous.

·         If during the course of the day weather conditions worsen to a degree unanticipated at 6:00 A.M., the President may cancel afternoon and/or evening classes or close one or both campuses.

·         If at any time Husson University in Bangor becomes closed due to weather conditions, the decision of President will be to close the Bangor campus of the seminary as well.

·         The President’s decision will be communicated to the webmaster for posting on the BTS website, recording on the snow call-in phone line, and publicizing on area television and radio stations.

·         The President’s decision will state clearly if it is applicable to the Bangor campus only, the Portland campus only, or to both campuses.

·         If classes are cancelled on one campus, video classes will not be held on either campus.

·         If the decision is to cancel classes rather than to close campus, members of the administrative staff are expected to report for work.

·         If classes are cancelled or a campus is closed, no member of the fulltime or adjunct faculty will override that decision and hold class nevertheless.

·         If classes have not been cancelled but an individual instructor is unable to travel to campus due to snow, it is the instructor’s responsibility to contact each and every student in his/her class(es) to inform them that that the instructor’s class(es) will not be held.

·         If classes have not been cancelled but an individual student feels unsafe traveling to campus due to the weather conditions, that student should not travel to the seminary.
