Trip to Ethiopia January 11-24, 2008
David Trobisch will lead a trip to Ethiopia for students, alumni, and friends of BTS.
The preliminary itinerary will begin in Addis Ababa, and then travel to Bahir Dar, located at an elevation of 6,000 feet. A boat cruise on Lake Tana (the largest highland lake in Ethiopia) will visit Ura Kidane Meheret and Aza Mariam, famous for their old manuscripts, crosses, icons, and paintings.
From Bahir Dar the trip continues by Land Cruiser to the Tississat (Smoke of Fire) Falls of the Blue Nile.
Next is Gondar, once the Royal Capital of Ethiopia, is the setting for castles and churchs built by Emperor Fassiladas and his descendants.
Then on to the prime historical site in the north of Ethiopia, Axum. This includes Stelae Park, which features a number of pre-Christian obelisks over 3,000 years old.
From Axum we’ll fly to Lalibela. Lalibela's 11 churches are some of the world's greatest architectural marvels. The town was designated a World Heritage Site in 1996. Each church was carved out of a solid piece of red volcanic rock between 800 - 1200 AD and are still active worship places.
Finally a return to Addis, where there will be a special "farewell dinner" where the group will have the chance to taste various national dishes, and watch dances of various ethnic groups of Ethiopia; the traditional coffee ceremony will also be served.
David Trobisch served BTS as Throckmorton-Hayes Professor of New Testament Language and Literature from 1997-2008 and will teach selected courses in 2008-2009 as Visiting Professor.
