An ordained minister
of the National Baptist Convention, Michelle currently teaches religion at
Huntingdon College, while also serving as the Associate Minister of United
Congregational UCC. The courses she has taught include “Survey of the Hebrew Bible,” “Survey of New Testament Scriptures,” “Wisdom and Poetic Literature,” “Torah and the Prophets,” “World Religions,” and “Blood Purification in the Hebrew Bible.”
Prior to joining the faculty at Huntingdon as Instructor of Religion, she was a Teaching Fellow both at Brandeis University and at United Theological Seminary (Dayton).
Michelle earned a B.S. in Business Administration at the University of Alabama, following which she spent a decade working as a civilian for the Air Force and the Navy, including being stationed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (so she knows about New England winters!). She finished her M.A. in Theological Studies at United Theological Seminary.
Currently she is a Ph.D. candidate at Brandeis University in the area of Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East, about to defend her dissertation: “Thus You Will Purge the Evil from Your Midst.” Brandeis enjoys a reputation for rigorous scholarship, particularly in the area of ancient languages.
She is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and of the American Academy of Religion. This fall Fortress Press published her paper on “Numbers” in the Biblia Africana Bible Commentary. Previously she had entries published in Eerdman’s Dictionary of the Bible.
Her public presentation on our campuses, observed one member of our faculty, revealed “developed skills and confidence as a classroom teacher… She clearly invests in her teaching, and it shows… Happily here’s someone who loves the Bible, loves the church, has had a good seminary experience herself, and is eager to prepare church leaders for their diverse ministries.” Michelle’s ability to engage everyone at every level in the classroom clearly is evident. She received particularly high marks from BTS students.
Michelle's office will be located on the Portland campus.
Founded in 1814 Bangor Theological Seminary is an ecumenical seminary in the Congregational tradition of the United Church of Christ. With campuses in Bangor and Portland, Maine, BTS is the only accredited graduate school of religion in northern New England.
