Happy Holidays
The plane late, the
airport packed, a long wait at the baggage carousel, even longer at the
rent-a-car counter, we drove directly to the church -- to the Christmas Eve
service -- there to meet Maris, our newest granddaughter, for the very first
time.
“Would you like to hold
the baby?” our daughter-in-law asked needlessly.
I did not give her back,
not until she had to go in the car seat for the ride home.
I don’t remember how the
church was decorated, which carols were sung, or what the preacher said. I
do remember her little fingers grasping my little finger, the softness of
her face to my touch, the gratitude I gave to God for this precious gift.
For those of us of the
Christian faith, God’s gift of the Christ-Child centers our lives.
Were it not for Jesus’
birth, there would be no church, no seminary, no call to serve, to
fulfillment of the prophets’ hope, no perfect revelation of God’s will, no
Prince of Peace for this world, no reason for belief in a world to come. Our prayer for you in this season so pregnant with meaning is that you will experience the faith, hope, and love, courage and compassion, peace and joy, which are to be found in God’s most precious gift.
