Farewell to Dr. David Trobisch

To all the members of the Bangor Theological Seminary Community:

At their meeting in February the Trustees of Bangor Theological Seminary accepted the resignation of Dr. David Trobisch effective July 1, 2008.

David’s resignation was neither sought nor expected.  It came as a surprise to all of us on the faculty and in the administration.

This has been a long-term goal for him: to take early retirement and combine the publishing work with giving lectures, conducting workshops, and writing.  His mother had been running the family business up to the time of her death last fall.

In working with his brother, who also was running the company, David realized that it would be wise to make this transition now rather then waiting another 3 to 4 years.

David loves teaching and loves students.  His presence in our midst will be greatly missed.  Plans are being developed, and will be announced very shortly, for a transitional year in which David will teach an intensive course this summer and next and will lead a trip to Ethiopia in January.

Plans are also being developed for a farewell lecture by David in the next school year.  You will have many opportunities, both formal and informal, to tell him of your appreciation.

The Academic Dean is working to assure that all needed New Testament courses will be taught next year.  Dr. Trobisch will offer some of them and other faculty – regular, adjunctive, or visiting – will cover the rest.

Next year will be an exciting and challenging time for David and Vera.  Their departure will leave a void at BTS.  And, we will trust God to send us the teacher(s) we need for the future well-being of the school.

In the next few years we will find ourselves often saying farewell to beloved colleagues and welcome to new colleagues.  In the sorrow of leave taking may we also discern the joy of new experiences, opportunities and relationships.

Ultimately our strength and hope is not to be found in the constantly shifting sands of human existence, but in the never changing fidelity of the Eternal One.  May the Holy One bless David and Vera, and  may all of us at BTS find ourselves sustained, blessed and empowered in the future to which God is calling us.
