  187th Commencement

The 187th Commencement of Bangor Theological Seminary was held in Portland on May 19th. This marked the first time the 192-year old institution has held commencement exercises in Portland.

"Since we've been in Portland for 15 years, it is fitting that the biggest Portland class ever should be the first class to graduate in Portland," said seminary President William Imes.

Since 1991 BTS has maintained a Portland campus at the State Street Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, located at 159 State Street which served as the location for the graduation activities.

This year's commencement address was delivered by the Rev. Douglas A. Walrath,
Lowry Professor of Practical Theology, Emeritus.

While a professor, Walrath developed the small church leadership program that is considered the backbone of the seminary's continuing education offerings.

The Rev. Dr. Ronald Baard, Assistant Professor of Mentored Practice, served as senior class advisor and preached during the morning senior service of worship.

Degrees were awarded to 19 graduates. A dozen students were awarded Master of Divinity degrees, six received Master of Arts degrees, and one received a doctorate in ministry.
