184th Commencement
Founded in 1814, Bangor Theological Seminary is the third oldest center of theological study in the nation. The Rev. Dr. Fred B. Craddock, the Bandy Distinguished Professor of Preaching and New Testament Studies, Emeritus, in the Candler School on Theology, Emory University, will deliver the commencement address. Dr. Craddock was named by Newsweek Magazine as one of the twelve best living preachers.
Dr. Craddock has a BA from Johnson Bible College, Knoxville, TN, a B.Div. from Phillips, and a Ph.D. in New Testament from Vanderbilt. He has also done post-doctoral study at Tübingen, Germany, and at Yale University. An ordained minister on the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Dr. Craddock has served pastorates in Tennessee and Oklahoma. In addition, he has served on several boards including chairing the Commission on Ministry for the Christian Church in Georgia. He presently serves on the Task Force on Ministry for the Christian Church. Dr. Craddock is a member of the Association of Disciples for Theological Discussion, the American Academy of Religion, the Society of Biblical Literature, and the Society for New Testament studies. He is on the Editorial Board of Quarterly Review. In addition to preaching and teaching widely at church assemblies and minister’s conferences, Dr. Craddock has served as guest professor at other seminaries and has written several books. President William C. Imes, the Seminary’s ninth president, will preside over the 184th commencement ceremony. The Seminary will award eleven Doctor of Ministry degrees, one Master of Theology degree, four Master of Arts degrees, eleven Master of Divinity degrees and two diplomas. Awards for scholastic achievement will also be presented. Among the graduates is the Reverend Claude Miller of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Rev. Miller has been elected as Coadjutor Bishop by the 126th session of the Diocesan Synod of Fredericton, NB, on March 15, 2003. His consecration will take place on June 24, and his installation as the 9th Bishop of Fredericton will take place on November 7, 2003.
