Bishop Peter D. Weaver, resident bishop of the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church, addressed the crowd of 250 guests and participants that overflowed the church sanctuary.
Bishop Weaver was elected to the episcopacy in 1996, after twenty-nine years of service as a local church pastor in congregations across the Western Pennsylvania Conference. At the 2004 General Conference, Bishop Weaver was installed as President of the Council of Bishops, which serves over eleven million United Methodists worldwide.
Three students were recognized with special awards for achievement. Lynne Campbell of Scarborough received the award for highest GPA in the graduating class as well as the Chamberlain Award, given for outstanding service to the Portland Campus. Tom Frey of Mount Vernon was recognized for “Excellence in the Liturgical Reading of the Scriptures” and presented with a Bible. Rosalee Glass of Camden received the Hoyt Hickman Award for Outstanding Liturgical Scholarship and Practice. Founded in 1814, Bangor Theological Seminary is the third oldest center of theological study in the nation. Since 1991 BTS has been a school in two places, with fully accredited campuses in both Bangor and Portland.
