Frequently Asked Questions
1. If I enter BTS now, will I be able to finish my degree? Yes. We are committed to continuing as a degree granting school. That is the core of Bangor Theological Seminary and will not change.
2. Is the Seminary alone in having fiscal difficulties? Our
Seminary is not alone. Nationwide, 90% of seminaries are facing similar
challenges. More students are choosing to go part time, and fewer full time
students means a reduction of tuition income.
3. What kind of changes are being considered? At this point a viable option is to partner with another school. This would allow us to share some resources which would in turn reduce operating costs.
4. Have you talked with other seminaries about joint efforts? Yes. We have received proposals from two UCC seminaries. The offers they have made would involve major changes to BTS that would affect our ability to faithfully carry out our core mission. As mentioned in point #1, the Seminary is committed to remaining a degree granting institution.
5. Have you talked with any other schools? Yes. Husson College in Bangor has made several proposals. Husson already has experience in collaborating with the New England School of Communications (NECSOM). While physically located on the Husson campus, NESCOM is a separate school that maintains its own building, administration, faculty, and classrooms.
6. What about the Portland campus? We do not anticipate any change in Portland. We will continue to offer classes and the full Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degrees in Portland.
