Introduction to Geology

 

Folds in the Vassalboro Formation outcrop seen in pictures 1 and 2. There are several different textures represented in the individual layers, reflecting the variability in the original sedimentary deposit. The layers in the center of the picture are relatively sandy; those to the left of center are finer-grained, more slatey.

Folds occur at many different scales -- some very fine, some at a medium scale, like this one; and some large or very large: this outcrop is itself one limb of a larger fold, the axial plane (center) of which is off to the left.
