FROM THE LIBRARIAN

Bangor Seminary's Centennial celebration was held in October, 1916. Over a period of four days, speakers came from many places, representing many constituencies, to pay tribute to this school. One speaker came in his 86th year—William Chauncy Pond (born, 1830), son of Enoch Pond, teacher and president of the seminary for over fifty years. William C. Pond reminisced about his time at the school, with special attention to what it was like to study under his father's tutelage.

William C. Pond made the journey to Bangor from his home in California where he had been Superintendent of the Chinese Mission of the American Missionary Association. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1848 and from Bangor Seminary in 1852. He then went to California where he pastored churches in San Francisco and other cities until his later assignment with the A.M.A. His story is told in his book, Gospel Pioneering in California.

Pond's remarks are brought to this issue from the seminary archives.

Having been working in the library of Bangor Seminary for the past thirty-five years, I am now ready to retire to other pursuits after August 31. It has been my pleasure to work with the books from the General Theological Library these past eight years, and to work to keep the mission of that organization alive to serve those who have fond memories of their experiences in the library in Boston. Tom O'Donnell, Assistant Librarian in Portland, will have charge of the Bulletin's continuance.

Best wishes to all,

Clifton G. Davis
