New Testament Studies (Graduate level)

NT1730p Reclaiming the Jewish Context of the Gospel  
PORTLAND. This intensive course will explore the roots of Christian gospel in the theological context of first-century Judaism. It will demonstrate its relevance to the composition of the Gospel of Mark and show how a knowledge of it enriches our self-understanding as Christians.

Practical Theology (Graduate level)

PT1732 Poetry and Theology: The Awful Rowing Towards God This intensive course will explore the place of poetry in the gospel ministry. An examination of the poetry of the Bible and of Christian liturgies, its uses in congregational life, and the rich resources it provides in pastoral care, homiletics, and spiritual growth will occur. Students will share their own explorations in poetry as a written and spoken art form and as a vital component of public worship, congregational life, and private devotion.

Church and Ministry Units (Graduate level)

CMU343 Orientation to Leading Worship and Supply Preaching 
Offers preparation for the responsibility of leading worship and preaching in Protestant congregations. Requirements include the preparation of a worship service and sermon which use the liturgical resources of the students' particular tradition, as well as the rationale for the theme of the worship service and the type of sermon. This course includes classroom exegetical work on lectionary texts and a brief historical survey of the nature of Christian worship. Enrollment is limited to 8.  No auditors.
