The Rev. Dr. William C. Imes

As President of Bangor Theological Seminary, I am pleased to welcome you to this website. We have tried to provide the information that you are seeking about the Seminary, its programs, its faculty, its students, and its two campuses.

You may be exploring a call in your life to ordained ministry. Educating persons for a Master of Divinity degree lies at the heart of our work in Bangor and Portland. On this website, you can learn more about this course of study and about the denominational and faith commitments of this school, which is both a seminary of the United Church of Christ in the Congregational tradition and broadly ecumenical (over half our students are non-UCC). We are a Protestant school in the Reformed tradition, yet we welcome Christians of every heritage. Empowered by its particular Christian roots, Bangor Theological Seminary embraces not only persons in diverse Christian communities but also those who are grounded in other faith traditions as well as those individuals who are seeking a religious identity.

You may not hold an undergraduate degree and are looking for information about our Bangor Plan. We were among the first to create this optional plan of study for M. Div. students and it is one of the special strengths of this Seminary.

You may be considering other work in the life of the Church, or you may be interested in relating your faith to issues in your life and in the world, or you may want to explore spirituality, or you may simply want to study just one topic. As an M.A. candidate, special student or auditor, you can pursue any of these possibilities. The training we offer for church leaders, the study of religion, and our consideration of the context in which we live all make possible a wide variety of growth in learning, skill and faith. We seek to be an open community.

You may simply be looking for a book. At the Bookstore listing, you can find whether we have in stock what you are seeking or you can browse and find items relating to your interests.

I hope that you will use these pages to discover the many ways that we are open to and for you. And, some day, I would be delighted to meet you beyond the pages of this website.

William C. Imes, President
Bangor Theological Seminary
